Prophets of Islam

Prophets are the chosen men whom Allah sent to guide humanity towards Tawheed and good conduct. According to Islamic belief, Prophet Adam (AS) was the first prophet. Later, Prophet Nuh (AS) called his people for many years and survived the great flood with an ark. Prophet Ibrahim (AS) is known by the title Khalilullah, the Friend of Allah. Along with his son Prophet Ismail (AS), the son of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Hazrat Hajar, he built the Kaaba.

Several prophets were given divine books. Prophet Musa (AS) is known by the title Kalimullah, because he spoke to Allah, and he received the Torah, called the Tawrat. His brother, Prophet Harun (AS), was his helper in calling Pharaoh to Allah. Prophet Dawud (AS) received the Psalms, called the Zabur, and as a young man he defeated Jalut, known in English as Goliath. His son, Prophet Sulaiman (AS), was granted a great kingdom, along with the ability to understand the speech of birds and animals.

Allah also sent prophets to particular nations. Prophet Hud (AS) was sent to the people of Aad. Prophet Salih (AS) was sent to the people of Thamud, and the she-camel, called Naqat Allah, was his miracle. Prophet Shuaib (AS) was sent to the people of Madyan. Each of them invited his people to worship Allah alone and to leave injustice and dishonesty.

Many prophets are remembered for patience in trials. Prophet Ayyub (AS) is known for his patience during severe illness and loss. Prophet Yusuf (AS) was sold into slavery by his brothers, as narrated in the Quran, yet he later became a man of great honour. Prophet Yunus (AS) was swallowed by a large fish, and he turned to Allah in repentance from its belly. Prophet Zakariyya (AS) was the father of Prophet Yahya (AS), who was given to him in his old age.

Prophet Isa (AS) was born miraculously without a father, and he received the Gospel, called the Injil. The chain of prophethood ended with Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who is the final prophet in Islam. In total, the Quran mentions 25 prophets by name, although Muslims believe that Allah sent many more to every nation.
